Brief description
Our educational initiative worked on integrating and reaching children with special educational needs (students with disabilities) within regular education and community-based programmes. Education of those students aimed simply to educate, develop skills, knowledge and values to achieve social justice, to live in safety and to implement principles of child rights especially the right to survival and development, the right to express their views and the right to live in dignity. All this was achieved by different groups of practitioners such as teachers, parents, specialists and community people with a clear commitment to achieve learning for all.

Outstanding aspects
Integration of learners with special educational needs (SEN) in mainstream education ensured that students with disabilities had full access, on an equal basis with other students, to regular schools and teachings. This improved their abilities, increased their self-confidence, made them happier and encouraged all community people to include students more effectively in their societies in addition to the mainstream classrooms.

The impact of the initiative
There was no doubt that our inspiring project had a great positive effect on everyone especially students with disabilities, teachers and the school administration who took part in several activities. First, students with special needs participated in the special education conference, the art exhibition, school picnics and “Kolalnas Radio” broadcasting. As a result, this improved their self- esteem, emphasized positive values and increased their self- confidence. Second, teachers became creative and distinguished as they did a great job in designing suitable aids and sport games, writing and composing educational songs, training and encouraging students with special needs. Finally the school administration cooperated with teachers in writing the proposal plan, organizing workshops, creating a safe environment, contacting the broadcast and  providing moral and financial support…….etc.

Success factors
Luckily, several factors contributed for the success of our project such as the welcome it got from the directorate of education. Moreover, we worked on our organized, complete, clear and applicable plan. There was also a cooperative work between the school principal, teachers, the school counselor, parents and the local institutions such as Al-Hanan Academy, the clinic and the mass media.

Challenges and difficulties
Honestly, we faced several obstacles and difficulties while applying our educational initiative. First, arranging meetings with people and institutions in the field to train teachers was difficult and took time. Second, lack of parents’ awareness of the importance of this initiative made some parents refuse to reveal their child’s disability and so dealing with them was difficult. Third, students with disabilities felt shy and were not able to express their opinions. Forth, we had difficulties in affording the suitable materials and text books. However, our determination and the help we got from everyone as we mentioned above lead to the success of our project.

Interest and social mobility caused by the initiative
We were so happy to see that this inspiring initiative got a great support from different people such as all members of the school, parents, societies, mass media, talented people and local centers.  All people worked and showed a clear commitment to making a difference in the education of children with special needs -people who are determined to make things happen.
